Taipei International Flora Expo

SINGAPORE (October 13, 2010) –

Transforming Taipei into a city of blossoming parks and gardens, the Flora Expo is the first internationally-recognized event of its kind to be hosted by the Taiwanese capital. Running from November 6, 2010 to April 25, 2011, the Expo aims to promote floriculture within Taipei and inspire both residents and international visitors to adopt sustainable living practices to help preserve our natural environment.

The theme of the Expo is 'Rivers, Flowers, New Horizons'. Fourteen exhibition halls across more than 90 hectares will house floral displays and showcase advances in environmental sciences, green technology and horticulture. The Expo will inhabit the Yuanshan area, including the Taipei Fine Arts Park, Yuanshan Park, Xinsheng Park and the popular recreational spot, Da-Jia Riverside Park.

The Expo site takes in some of Taipei's most high-profile cultural venues, with displays that range from the historical to the high-tech. All 14 exhibition sites offer visitors something educational and inspirational. The following is a selection of event highlights travelers should be sure to catch.

Story House. Taiwan's only Tudor-style building is set in a classic English garden and will have 700 Taiwanese antiques on display, offering visitors a snapshot of aristocratic life in 19th-century Taiwan.

Pavilion of New Fashion. This high-tech hall – dubbed the 'FE ecoARK' – is made entirely of recycled garbage, including 1.5 million recycled PET bottles. Visitors strolling through its quiet, airy passageways can reflect on the unity of 'heaven and humanity' and experience the elements of light, wind and water.

Pavilion of Angel Life. This pavilion combines art with life, featuring design that integrates holistic practices and aesthetics. A large theatre projects high-definition images of Taiwan – a great introduction for first-time visitors to the country.

Pavilion of the Future. This is an innovative exhibition zone with a greenhouse powered by green energy. Here, visitors can witness the role of technology in creating a more harmonious existence between humans and the environment.

Pavilion of Dreams. Located in Xinsheng Park, visitors here are given a 'technology dream bracelet' that projects a holographic flower. 3D movies and virtual reality displays engage each of the audience's five senses.

Celebrity's House: From the late '60s through to the 80s, the late Teresa Teng was one of Asia's leading female singers and today she's a Taiwanese icon. In this exhibition, Teng's life is interpreted through art and technology – guests can listen to her music, attend seminars by local artists and celebrities and create their own floral arrangements, a practice believed to still the mind and promote oneness with nature.
